UseLess MRKT

UseLess MRKT is a marketplace where new creations are exhibited and sold. It presents an eclectic selection of design products from various designers around the world. Visitors can pick up the designs and make purchase in the creative retail environment.

It was featured next to the UseLess Gallery, within the Icsid World Design Congress 2009 Exhibition, held at the Suntec City Convention & Exhibition Hall. Here, visitors could also purchase and take home some of the exhibits/products that were featured in the UseLess Gallery.

As the parallel event to the Singapore Design Festival 2009, the Icsid World Design Congress 2009 engaged the world’s leading creative thinkers and their visionary ideas that centred around the theme ‘Design 2050’ and how design will play a vital part in shaping a better world of tomorrow.

We are proud to have worked on the Icsid Congress handbook which guided the delegates through the eye-opening 3 day congress. A seamless system of graphics was specially created for this event, that could gradually evolve and depicted the underlying message of ‘Design Difference’.

These graphics were also applied to other collaterals, including brochures, name tags, posters, badges, as well as to the built-up entrance arch at the congress venue and signages.

Work_Bunnies Bakery Re-branding

Bunnies is a bakery located in Chinatown, famous for their fantastic mini-buns. Available in flavours that run the gamut, from traditional kaya, redbean, to cheese, curry and even yam and salted bean!

We were inspired by the hot trays of freshly baked mini-buns and Bunnies was born. Seek them out at People’s Park Complex, Chinatown unit 01-66.

UseLess Life: Designs for a Sustainable Lifestyle

UseLess Life, the latest edition of Utterubbish, was a featured exhibition of the Kaohsiung Design Festival 2009, in May this year. The exhibition transformed old Kaohsiung pier warehouse into a conceptual “living environment” of sustainable design. The exhibition was divided into thematic areas representing the different parts of the “home”, where the audience were able to interact and contribute to certain parts of the exhibition. Through their journey, the audience experienced first-hand the concept of a “sustainable lifestyle”. Demonstrating how design plays a part in our daily lives, the show was experiential and immersive. By encouraging participation in the various exhibits, the design process is demystified and allows the visitor to clearly see his own role in the design chain and enabling and empowering him to make better choices for design.

Over 70 designs ideas and 15 design presentations where shown, by designers from all over, namely, COLORS, Artecnica, treasured trash, Jonathan Harris, thomasmattews, Trent Jansen, [re]design, Reincarnation, KesselsKramer, BLESS, Chris Lefteri, Project H Design, No Life Zoo and Phalanx Studio. From Singapore, Little Red Dots, Doinky Doodles, Kinetic and Orca Design.

Work_Foodfare Re-Branding

Black recently worked on the full rebranding of the NTUC Foodfare foodcourts, giving its identity and interiors a facelift in collaboration with Wallflower Architects.

The foodcourts situated in Sembawang (photographed above), Simei and newly launched Rivervale Mall, now exude a minimal and no-fuss environment for the patrons to tuck-in in. Designed with the user in mind, the entire user-experience from entering the foodcourt, purchasing and enjoying their meal, to leaving the place was carefully considered in the design process. There are even hooks situated under the table for patrons to hang their bags.

The new look and branding of NTUC Foodfare, along with its tagline “Go Work, Go Play, Go Eat” ensures that the focus is placed on providing well-priced, economic and yummy meals to patrons of all ages and walks of life.

New Wave: Singapore’s Contemporary Design Culture

Situated at the crossroads between east and west, Singapore’s young multi-cultural society is highly cosmopolitan and open to embracing and adopting diverse ideals and influences. Since the last decade, there has been a rise of a young generation of Singaporean creators. Working across design disciplines, they are inspiring a “New Wave” of contemporary culture movement. They are shaping and re-defining Singapore’s new visual aesthetics, identity, language, vision and culture. At the heart of this lies a new culture of design.

The New Wave exhibition captures an exciting phase in Singapore’s culture as the island-state repositions itself as a new global design centre. It showcases the works of designers who are establishing themselves as part of the “New Wave”. The exhibition also explores the conceptual theme of “New Identity”. 8 designers were invited to participate in this visual exploration through their own individual cross-disciplinary design concepts, processes, mediums and executions. The collection of “New Identities” from the individual designers, captures the spirit and vision for the future of Singapore’s design landscape.

NewWave was one of the featured exhibitions of the inaugural Kuala Lumpur Design Week 2009.

Following the successful exhibition in Shizuoka, Japan, NewWave ‘Singapore’s Contemporary Design Culture’ made its way next to the shores of Taiwan. Showcasing Singapore’s finest design talents at the Taiwan Design Expo 2008 in Tainan. As well as the Taiwan International Cultural & Creative Industries Exhibition held in Taipei.

The designers’ work and products were also put up for sale. Joining the previous designers, Air Design Group, &Larry, H55, MakiSquarepatch were Hansel, and Little Red Dots among others.

Exhibition_UIA World Congress 2014

Black designed the exhibition booth for Singapore Institute of Architects’ bid for the UIA World Congress in 2014, in Turin, Italy. A Tree took centre- stage as visitors were invited to show their support for Singapore, by writing on tags provided. These tags were hung on the Tree, as we watched it grow through the days of the exhibition.

Black was commissioned to develop the brand identity and collateral for Singapore Institute of Architects’ bid for the UIA World Congress in 2014. The theme for the bid was “Green Cities” to represent Singapore’s commitment to sustainable design, being eco-friendly and going green. Only recycled or sustainable materials were used in the production of the collateral and exhibition.

Black was commisioned to do a rebranding exercise for Rediffusion, a local broadcaster. Rediffusion is a brand with a great heritage that was famous for delivering great local content over the airwaves in the 60s and 70s. For this project, we maintained a lot of the old school design sensitivities rather than opting for something completely new. The theme for the President's Design Award 2007 last year was “Blooming Flowers”, signifying the coming of age for the Award in its second presentation. This year, the theme for the President's Design Award 2008 is “Waves”. Visually, it is a smooth and gradual evolution from the graphics in the previous year. The theme for 2008 represents the new “wave” of Award Recipients that is coming to the forefront of design. It is reﬂective of the paradigm shift of Singaporean design that is redefining our design landscape, bringing us one step closer to achieving our goal of becoming a leading design capital. It also signifies the momentum that the President’s Design Award has developed over the three years.

Work_Peranakan Museum

The Peranakan Museum officially opened its doors on 26 April 2008. This project was a collaborative effort between W Architects and Black. Black developed the graphic content, multi-media content including the signage system and decorative graphics for the museum. It is the first museum in Singapore to use graphic design intensively within its environment as both content and decor. The specially developed motifs and colour scheme were inspired from the artifacts within the museum. The Peranakan Museum is managed by the Asian Civilisations Museum.

The UseLess Shop is a special concept retail store created for Utterubbish! It retailed products based around the UseLess theme. Of which a special collection of original products called UseLess Products such as tyvek jackets and totebags, mugs and foldable bins were sold exclusively in limited quantity. UseLess water was also sold at the exhibition and lounge area.

UseLess Shop is a collaboration between Basheer Graphic Books and Utterubbish.

Utterubbish: A Collection of UseLess Ideas

Utterubbish is a unique design experience that presents ideas, works and exhibits by 30 leading international and local designers and creators unified in their exploration on how design can create value for individuals, society and the world, whether Social, Cultural, Emotional, Functional, Economic, Commercial or Intellectual. It fully integrates an exhibition, a conference, talks and workshops, a publication and a retail concept store to engage audiences in presentations that dramatically highlight the role and direction design plays in creating a sustainable future.

The UseLess Exhibition spanned 2,000 sq metres on the 4th floor of the City Hall. It covers a wide range of creative disciplines, including product, furniture, fashion, graphic, environmental design and architecture. Over-arching themes includes sustainable design and eco-design, design activism, promotion of craft and how design can create value for self, society and the world for a sustainable future. Intended to inform and inspire, the collection of exhibits will inspire new ideas, discussions and collaborations.

Black Design was awarded the very first Best of Show award at the 2006 Creative Circle Awards. This is the first time in history that the Creative Circle Awards has had a Best of Show award for design. The award was for the work done on the 20/20 Under Construction exhibition which also took a gold at the awards! Other awards won that night include a bronze for the 20/20 typeface.

SINGAPORE DESIGN TOUR
LONDON - SINGAPORE

The return leg of the “20/20 Movement - Singapore Design Tour” was back in Singapore at the National Library. As it was scheduled just one month after the show in London. The exhibition was literally "fresh off the boat", having just reached by sea freight back to Singapore. Based on the original concept of travel, transport and movement and due to the fact of limited time and resource, the design of the exhibition was designed to reflect the "in transit" mode. The display showcases were customised from the original wooden boxes that carried the works back from London. All the fixtures such chairs, tables, benches and television sets were intentionally displayed with the original packing still unremoved. The 20/20 boxes were also displayed on wooden freight pallets.
The design concept visually communicated the movement of the Singapore designers, who are "ready to be exported" and launched around the world.

The theme for the 2006 London Design Festival show was “20/20 Movement – Singapore Design Tour”. A collective showcase of a new generation of multi-disciplinary designers that embodies an unconventional design movement and attitude.

The concept behind “20/20 Movement - Singapore Design Tour” is based on the fact that the Singapore design scene is moving, in a movement where both DesignSingapore and local designers are pushing boundaries, breaking new ground along the way. Especially with the globalisation of design, our design talents have become increasingly mobile and move constantly in different, interesting speeds and directions.

Being that this is the first time 20/20 is moving to London, the intention is to create a conceptual show that also moves the audience to a design destination that will change their impression on Singaporean design. To take them on a design journey inspired by the universally recognised codes, graphics and designs of transportation. This conceptual show will be housed in a specially designed “Creative Depot” with 20 parking lots to showcase conceptual work the 20 designers that will position Singapore as an up and coming design capital.

Black was commisioned by DesignSingapore Council to design the “36 Design Actions” book, loosely inspired by “36 Strategies” the historical Chinese classic of war strategies. 36 Design Actions, helps people to become design savvy by incorporating design into their daily lives through 36 simple actions.

Here’s a few actions...

No. 4 - Always judge a book by its cover. Great products come with great packaging, be a discerning consumer.

No. 8 - Talk to someone different. Talk to folks from different walks of life. They may know cool stuff that you don’t.

No. 29 - Seize the moment. Ideas are only fresh when nobody else has done it. Be the first.

In this brand campaign, the intention is to create inspirational landscapes that will both thrill and leave an indelible impression in the minds of the target audience. This is achieved by using statement pieces from various key brands in carefully selected style projections. These style projections will be the creative entry point where we can communicate that ModLiving is not only contemporary but also progressive in its outlook.

Exhibition_20/20 Under Construction

The theme for 2005's exhibition was "Under Construction." As we felt that after creating the 'building blocks' for the previous year, it was time to start the construction process. The show was staged at the outdoor foyer on the ground floor of the Lee Kong Chian Reference Library from 16 to 18 November 2005.

The overall design of that exhibition was be bigger than the previous year. While the industrial conveyor belt was still a feature, we added on industrial scaffolding to display the new exhibits. This new addition (i.e. scaffolding) to the exhibition format represents the “construction” process. The work was presented in a completely new way within the scaffolding and there was also a live performance by Kinemat to launch the event. Again 2,020 20 cm x 20 cm boxes were produced with a book to showcase the latest designers.

The 20 designers featured in 2005 were nominated by the previous 20 contributors from 2004. This is an ongoing process where every year’s showcase will be nominated by the previous contributors. 2005’s show also included some of the best creative talents from around the world such as New York based photographer John Clang, Hong Kong based fashion stylist Zing, Chris Lee from Asylum, furniture designers Air Division, Singapore-based French illustrator Agathe de Balliencourt, fashion designer and illustrator
Jo Soh etc.
